Local therapist, Rebecca Stephan of Balancing Mindsets

Meet Becca!

My path toward becoming a therapist was born from a deep, personal understanding of what it means to navigate a world that doesn’t always feel built for you. Growing up in a home shaped by physical disability, family addictions, and mental health struggles, I learned early on that life is as beautiful as it is messy. These experiences gave me a unique lens—one rooted in genuine empathy and a love for the resilience we all carry. I am proud of the work I’ve done to find my own center. By learning how to calm my nervous system, set healthy boundaries, and choose my own well-being, I’ve discovered how to turn overwhelming chaos into a life of clarity and calm.

While my formal training began at Michigan State University, my real expertise comes from years of showing up for my community in diverse ways. Whether I am coaching my children’s sports teams, supporting students in crisis as a school social worker, or helping couples and parents navigate their most difficult seasons in private practice, I am committed to building meaningful relationships. I have spent the last decade working across all disability areas—including Autism, ADHD, anxiety, and depression—and I have seen first-hand that for real change to happen, we have to look at the whole person.

Beyond the titles we hold or the challenges we face, there is a core human commonality that connects us all. We all need to feel seen, to find our footing, and to experience a sense of peace. In this space, you aren't a diagnosis or a checklist; you are a person doing the best you can in a chaotic world. I believe that regardless of what role you play—parent, partner, or professional—you deserve a place to find balance as a human first.

Balancing Mindsets resident therapy dog, Carmy!

Meet Carmy!

If traditional talk therapy feels too intense or intimidating, a therapy dog can serve as a bridge to healing. This session is designed for those who need an extra layer of comfort. The simple act of petting a trained therapy dog has been clinically shown to lower anxiety and encourage open communication. It’s a "no-pressure" way to find your center while we work through your most challenging obstacles together.

At two years old, Carmine is more than just a friendly face; he is a vital part of our therapeutic team. A Pomsky with a deep love for people, he has been professionally trained through Paw Alliance to provide comfort and emotional support during difficult sessions. With a natural sense of empathy, he often knows exactly when someone needs a quiet anchor by their side. Whether he is sitting nearby or offering a calming presence for you to pet while we talk, Carmy is here to ensure that as we navigate life’s chaos, you never have to do it alone.

This is an optional service you can add on or decline when booking your session.
